Elizabeth “Betty” Herda, age 97, resident of Devils Lake, ND, died Sunday, Feb. 5, 2023, at the Good Samaritan Society in Lakota, ND.
Elizabeth Christine Kurtz was born June 12, 1925 in Devils Lake, ND, the daughter of Casper & Louise (Keller) Kurtz. She was raised and attended school in Devils Lake. Betty was a telephone operator for Central Telephone before her marriage to Floyd Joseph Herda on June 8, 1948, at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Devils Lake. After raising her children, Betty then worked at Heartland Care Center for over 18 years as a CNA. Floyd died Sept. 16, 2007. Betty was a past member of the PTA, the Foresters, and St. Catherine’s Circle at St. Joseph’s Church. She was very caring and loving, especially with her grandchildren. She enjoyed her trips to the casino and the family would like to thank the casino ladies, Joni, Jane, and Mary, for all of their support and fun times with Betty at the casino. We would also like to thank Sherry Klett for all of the care and assistance given to Betty. Betty was the matriarch of her family and held a special place in their hearts. She loved every member of her family dearly and showed it in many ways. She was the best cook, the life of the conversation, and was the person who never failed to make us laugh. She lived a long, happy life and will be deeply missed.
Betty is survived by her son, Donald Herda of Devils Lake; daughter-in-law, Barbara Herda of Lakota, ND; son-in-law, Ian McCaughey of Regina, Saskatchewan; 5 grandchildren, Keith, Andrew, and Colleen McCaughey, Matthew (Angela) Herda, and Heather (Steve) Folmer; 5 great grandchildren, Alexis, Macy, and Thomas Herda, and Rylie and Kaleb Leith; 1 great great granddaughter, Hazel Herda; 1 brother, Julie Kurtz of San Jose, CA; 1 sister, Wallie Klier of Devils Lake; and many nieces & nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Floyd; son, Tom Herda; daughter, Theresa McCaughey; a great grandson, Lane Herda; 2 sisters, Rose Hannon and Marian Reller; 6 adult brothers, Richard, Cass, Joe, Balzer, John, and Tim; and 2 baby brothers that died in infancy.
The Funeral Mass for Betty will be held at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Devils Lake, ND, on Saturday, Feb. 11, 2023, at 10:00 a.m. Interment will be at St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery, Devils Lake. Visitation will be held at the church on Friday, beginning at 5:00 p.m. with a Vigil & Rosary Service at 7:00 p.m. Visitation will continue at the Church on Saturday, from 9:00 a.m. until the time of Mass.
In lieu of flowers, we respectfully suggest that Masses be offered for the Herda family, or memorials may be directed to the Lakota Good Samaritan Society.
