Muriel Sofia Thoreson passed away on Saturday, April 12, 2025, at Eventide Heartland Care Center, Devils Lake at the precious age of 104.
There will be a graveside service for Muriel at the Devils Lake Cemetery on Friday, May 2, 202,5 at 10 a.m. with Ben Bergstrom officiating.
Muriel Sofia, daughter of Oscar and Martha (Johnson) Anderson, was born on September 24, 1920, on the family farm, Grandfield Township, Eddy County, rural Sheyenne, N.D. Muriel grew up on the family farm and attended a country school. As a young girl, she worked as a maid for a family in Minneapolis, and when she returned to North Dakota, she worked as a housekeeper and cook at the Sheriff’s House and jail in Devils Lake.
Muriel was united in marriage to Theodore Thoreson on June 17, 1944. They established their home in Devils Lake. They lived a short time in Grand Forks, N.D., also. Muriel worked a variety of jobs to help support the family. She was a waitress at the 313, worked at the Arcade, and was a CNA at the newly opened Lake Region Lutheran Home in Devils Lake. While living in Grand Forks, she was the cook at the Delta Delta Delta Sorority House.
Muriel never had time for hobbies, but in her younger years did enjoy embroidery, and after retiring,g she was an avid reader.
After over 60 years of marriage, Theodore passed away on May 2, 2005. Muriel continued to live a quiet life surrounded by loving family, dear friends, and treasured the independence of living on her own.
Muriel will be greatly missed by her children Darlene Svedberg, Devils Lake, Diane (Robert) Alexander, Tamassee, S.C., and Bradley T. Thoreson, Galveston Island, Texas; grandchildren Amy Mastrud, Erika (Jason) Patzer, Chris (Sandra) Svedberg: Betsy (Bret) Dalton, Katie Alexander: Rebecca (Lloyd) Richardson; many great grandchildren and several great great grandchildren and nieces and nephews and their families.
She is reunited with her husband Ted, granddaughter Rochelle Thoreson, brothers Eugene Anderson and Clarence Anderson, sisters Myrtle Strand and Lucille Gestson, son-in-law Arlo Svedberg, daughter-in-law Kathy Thoreson, grandson-in-law Kevin Mastrud.
Pallbearers will be her great-grandchildren Austin Mastrud, Brianna Thoreson, Sierra Mastrud, Elizabeth Svedberg, and Madison Svedberg.
