Arnold Merrill Moen, age 96, passed away peacefully surrounded by his loving family on Monday, Jan. 30, 2023.

Arnold was born Nov. 16, 1926, to Mathias and Signe (Elgin) Moen. He attended school in Grand Harbor township and Devils Lake. He worked on various farms in the area and helped his Dad on the family farm.

He served in the US Navy in WWII from 1944 to 1946. He was on the ABS-D6 off the Island of Guam. Arnold was a member of the V.F.W Neathery Simensen Post 756, and American Legion Post 122 of Oberon.

On Nov. 25, 1948, he married Patricia A. Darling. Together Arnold and Patricia raised 7 children. They made their home in Devils Lake. In 1951 they moved to Butte, MT, where he worked for Victor Chemical Plant. In 1956, they moved back to North Dakota and purchased the family homestead, west of Devils Lake, from his father. Arnold started working for Lake Region Sheet Metal and worked for them until his retirement at age 70.

Arnold enjoyed planting big gardens to feed the whole family. He enjoyed hunting, camping, fishing and occasional trips to casinos with his kids.

He is survived by his children, Carolyn Arlien, Aneta, ND, Pamela (James) Davis, Mandan, ND, Russell (Sheila) Moen, Devils Lake, ND, Richard (Dorothy) Moen, Devils Lake, ND, Kim (Bradley) Nosbusch, Warroad, MN, Terri (Larry) Locken and Patricia Jo (Mark) Hanson, Aneta, ND, grandchildren, Jeffrey (Amber) Arlien, Jennifer (John) Koskela, John (Tammy) Davis, Michael (Brei) Davis, Kristopher (Amanda) Davis, Rusti (Mike) Post, Tracy (Cory) Armes, Matthew (Carrie) Moen, Isaac (Amber) Moen, Jessica (Neil) Donnelly, Amanda (Jason) Skappel, Casey Nosbusch, Brittany Nosbusch, Christopher (Darcy) Locken, Scott Locken, Jay Jay Darling, Erik (Casey) Locken, Justin (Marika Leben) Locken, Alison (Jackson Weiman) Trenda, Bryce Trenda; great grandchildren Austin (Bayleigh Lucek), Zachery Arlien, Ethan Praska, Morgan Praska, Raymond Davis, Stephanie Davis, Logan Davis, Jayden Davis, Ewan Davis, Liam Davis, C’aira Davis, CoraLynn Davis, Tanner (Hannah Burt) Post, Jordynn (Nicolas) Hansen, Brendan Armes, Emma Armes, Grace Armes, Caleb Swinland, Cole Moen, Carlee Swinland, Noelle Moen, Lucas Moen, Ellerie Moen, Finley Moen, Emerson Moen, Simon Donnelly, Cameron Skappel, Damon Skappel, Harlow Nosbusch, Elizabeth Locken, James Locken, Landon George, Cassidy Johnston, Kaylee Locken, great-great grandchildren Brynnleigh Hansen, Everly Arlien, Oliver Arlien; many nieces and nephews; sisters Doris Johnson, Verna Newman; brother Vernon (Marcia Ulrich) Moen.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 53 years Patricia, infant daughters Luann and Genevieve Moen, parents Mathias and Signe Moen, grandson Zachary Moen, son-in-law Dwight Arlien, sister Mildred Oleson, Sylvia Rude, Selma Shelver, Arlene Nelson, brothers Melvin Moen, Donny Moen, sisters-in-law Arlene Moen, Deanna Moen, brothers-in-law Leland Oleson, Charles Johnson, Justine Rude, Ted Shelver, Dale Nelson and his best furry friend, KZZY.

Visitation was held on Friday, Feb. 3, 2023 at the Gilbertson Funeral Home, Devils Lake from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. with a time of prayer and remembrance at 7:00 p.m. Funeral Services were on Saturday, Feb. 4, 2023, at 3:00 p.m. at St. Olaf Lutheran Church with Reverend Lori Pankratz officiating. Casket bearers were Jeffrey Arlien, Michael Davis, Matthew Moen, Isaac Moen, Erik Locken and Bryce Trenda. Reading Scripture will be grandson Jay Jay Darling. Music will be provided by granddaughter Jessica Donnelly and Patty Cote.

Military Honors will be accorded and burial in the spring at the Norway Lutheran Cemetery, rural Devils Lake.
