Lois Weed 85 passed away on October 3 2022.
Lois was born at the McVille hospital on October 7 1936. She had an enchanted childhood growing up on Lakeview Farm north of Tolna playing with her sisters especially at her favorite place called Battle Hill. After finishing primary school in a one room school house, she graduated from Tolna High School in 1955 and attended nursing school in Grand Forks through 1957. She met her husband Richard at a softball game, and they married in January 1960. The couple eventually raised their family on their farm west of Devils Lake. She and Richard were avid bowlers, enjoyed auction sales, being on the farm, gardening and the outdoors. For 15 years, Lois worked as a nurse in the Devils Lake clinic with Dr.s Mahoney and Lazareck, before becoming head nurse in the ICU at Mercy Hospital for 12 years. Lois finished her nursing career in the cardiac rehab unit. After retirement she worked part time as a nurse including with hospice. She was loved by all who knew her. Lois was selected to receive the Devils Lake “Unsung Hero” award in 2002 for her commitment to helping others including volunteering for outpatient hospice. Lois never liked the spotlight to be on her.
Lois dedicated over 50 years to being an active member of the United Methodist Church. She was especially proud to be a member of the FUMC choir. She was the most loving, caring, and supportive wife, mother, daughter-in-law, grandmother, sister, aunt and friend. She loved being with family, and especially singing with her sisters and sister-in- law. Her greatest joy was her grandchildren who called her “Honey.” It was her infectious laughter and ability to laugh at almost anything that endeared her the most to family. She will be so missed.
Lois is survived by her children Becky Emerson (Shawn), and children Shawn and Daryn Eisenzimmer, Olivia Emerson; Wendy Sports and her children Cady and Liam; Monte and his children Kaitlin and Joshua, Joey (Deb) and his children Hadley and Jas; her great grandchildren Gavin, Journey, Sawyer, Marik, Natalie, Grayson; sister Alice (Lee)Brotherton, brother in law Ray Walter, sister in laws Carol Weed and Ila Weed, and many nieces and nephews.
Lois is preceded in death by her husband Richard in 1994, parents Norman and Hilma Johnson, brother Harold and his wife Delorice, sister Carol Mae and her husband Dale Flaagan, sister Barbara Walter. She was also preceded by her in-laws Monroe and Vera Weed, Glen and Dorothy Hodous, Helen Mae and Walter Hanson, Donald Weed, Raymond Weed, nephews Steven Johnson, Mark Johnson, Russel Weed.
Those close to her have been blessed to be part of her life. Those who were close to her were aware of how fortunate they were to have her in their lives. Lois lives through the memories of her compassion, her care, laughter and her warm bear hugs. In her wake, Lois has left behind an entire community who will miss her.
In her last years, she struggled with dementia and received excellent care at Heartland memory care unit and nursing home. Her life will be celebrated for many years, and she will always hold a special place in the hearts of those who loved her.
A family and friend gathering to share memories and favorite stories of Lois will be held at Gilbertson Funeral Home on Friday, October 7 from 6:30 to 8:30 PM. A service in celebration of her life will be held on Saturday, October 8th 2022 at the First United Methodist Church of Devils Lake starting at 10:30 AM. In lieu of flowers and gifts, memorial donations can be donated to First United Methodist Church in Devils Lake.
