Arlene Ada (Scott) McDougall, 87, passed away from natural causes on Wednesday March 13, 2024, in Meridian, Idaho. She was preceded in passing by her husband of 53 years, Jack Neil McDougall, and her daughter-in-law, Lyndi McDougall. Arlene is survived by all three of her children: James McDougall of Maple Valley, Washington; Alley Greymond of Seattle, Washington; and Laura (and Craig) Coe of San Jose, California, as well as six grandchildren Daniel, Lauren, D’Ann, Bonnie, Whitney, and Gary, and nine Great-Grandchildren.
Arlene was born in 1936 and was raised on the family farm in Starkweather, ND. She was preceded in passing by her parents, Francis and Louisa (Ames) Scott, and her six siblings: Walter Scott, Loretta Courtney, Esther Tronnes, Mazie Loehr, Carol Jabs, and Arden Scott.
After High School, Arlene earned a Rural Teacher’s Certificate from Mayville State Teacher’s College. She taught grades 1-8 in a one-room, 22-student rural schoolhouse in Fort Totten, ND. After one year, she determined that neither teaching nor the bitter cold winters of North Dakota were for her. She moved to reside near her older sister Loretta Courtney in Seattle, WA, where she was introduced to Jack McDougall. Jack and Arlene married in April 1957 and started a family. In 1961, they bought a home in the North Queen Anne neighborhood, where they raised their family. In 1969, Arlene earned a bookkeeping certificate from Seattle Central Community College and was subsequently employed as a Full Charge Bookkeeper until her retirement in 2001. In 2004, they relocated to Everett, where Jack passed away in 2010. Arlene remained in their Everett home until 2019 before relocating to Meridian, Idaho to live near her granddaughter, Bonnie.
Arlene enjoyed reading Western novels, solving crossword puzzles, sewing, gardening, and most of all, dancing. Jack and Arlene enjoyed taking long road trips throughout the Western USA and Canada as well as several trips to Europe.
Both Arlene and Jack’s ashes will be interred together at the Riverview Cemetery in Oroville, Washington at 1 p.m. on Saturday July 21, 2024.
