Brian Weed was born on Sep. 8, 1938, and left us on Jan. 10, 2024, Pacific Grove, CA.
His parents were Ernest and Millie Weed of Devils Lake, ND, where he was born. Brian completed high school there and got his Bachelor’s Degree at Northwestern University. After Officer Candidate School he served as an officer on a USN oiler, the Kawishinwi. He obtained his Master’s Degree and teaching credentials from the University of North Dakota.
Following his honorable discharge in San Francisco, he and a buddy decided to explore the California coast. The few days they spent on the Monterey Peninsula left an impression on him.
So, once he received his teaching credentials, he applied to MPUSD and got a position at Monterey High School. After a few years, he decided teaching high school students was not for him. Teaching was in his blood and fortunately, he found his niche in teaching adults about birds. He taught for more than 20 years at the Pacific Grove Adult School, making lifelong friends. His classroom was the outdoors, teaching bird identification and many other things along the way. He served on the Audubon Board and the Pt Lobos foundation Board.
Brian met his wife, Jan Scott, through the Monterey Audubon Society in 1982. They enjoyed over 40 years together, traveling, camping, and looking for and identifying birds. In addition to his wife he leaves his daughter, Elisabeth Pirkle (James) of Monterey and grandchildren, Scott and Jeri. He is also survived by his brother Mark (Connie) of Fargo, ND, and niece Kate Hruby (Brad) of Sioux Falls, SD, and grandnieces Olivia, Lauren, Meredith, Hanna and Saylor. He was preceded in death by nephews Ryan and Michael.
Those who knew him would say he was a kind and gentle man with a deep love of family, nature and books.
If you would like to honor Brian, a donation to the Monterey Audubon Society or the MC Food Bank would be appreciated.
Celebration of his life was held at the Pacific Grove Museum of Natural History on Feb. 20, 2024.
