Richard N. Ritter, 85 of Devils Lake formerly of Munich ND passed away Sunday, April 28, 2024 at CHI, St. Alexius Health, Devils Lake Hospital.
Richard Norris Ritter was born Dec. 19, 1938, in Langdon ND the oldest child of Norris and Ovidia (Barstad) Ritter. Richard lived 18 years on the family farm in Huron Township.
He attended grade school at Huron Township School and high school at Clyde Public School and graduated in 1956. He continued his education at Interstate Business College for two years in Fargo, ND.
He started working at First State Bank of Munich in May of 1958 and retired from there in 1999.
Richard joined the North Dakota Army National Guard in Devils Lake ND in October of 1960 and was discharged in 1966.
Bernetta Schommer and Richard were united in marriage on June 21, 1961 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Munich, ND. They had two children, Kevin and Cindy.
Richard was an active community member; he was President of the City of Munich Park District for 27 years, served as Treasurer for Munich Public School District, served as President/Secretary/Treasurer for the Munich Commercial Club, was a member of St. Mary’s Church, Knight of Columbus 4th Degree, Devils Lake Elks, life member of Lodge #1216 Fraternal Order of Eagles in Langdon ND and the American Legion Post #276 at Sarles, ND.
Richard enjoyed fishing and hunting, the trips to Canda fishing, hunting ducks, geese and pheasants in North Dakota and also fishing at Devils Lake the past few years.
Time spent with the children and grandchildren, boating, water skiing and tubing at Vagabond Village in Park Rapids, MN for many summers were a great time for Richard. They even had Christmas in July a few times in the later years.
Richard is survived by his wife Bernetta; son Kevin (Rebecca) Ritter, Bismarck ND and daughter Cindy Babinski, Virginia MN; grandchildren Lauren (Ryan) Guggenberger, Bismarck, Dr. Katie Ritter, Coralville IW: Rebecca Babinski, Sartell MN and Matthew (Andrea) Babinski, Duluth MN; great grandchildren (Rebecca’s) Isaac and Jaxon Stewart and (Matthew’s) William, Theodore and Maxwell Babinski; sisters Gloria Romfo, Langdon ND and Carole Sharff, Christine ND; many dear in-laws, nieces, nephews and their families.
He was preceded in death by his parents, infant son Gerald, brothers-in-law Armond Romfo and Carter Sharff; in-laws Andrew and Annie Schommer.
Visitation for Richard was on Wednesday, May 1 at the Gilbertson Funeral Home. Mass of Christian Burial will be at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Devils Lake on Thursday, May 2 at 2:00 p.m. The Rosary will be recited at 1:30 p.m. by the Knights of Columbus with a 4th Degree Honor Guard at St. Joseph on Thursday prior to the Mass. Burial with Military Honors will be at St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery in Munich, ND on Friday, May 3 at 2:00 p.m.
