Connie Nelson, 70, of Churchs Ferry, ND passed away Thursday, Feb. 1, 2024, at the Towner County Living Center in Cando, ND, after a courageous, brief battle with cancer. A Graveside Service will be held at the Churchs Ferry Cemetery in rural Churchs Ferry, ND, at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorials can be sent to the Churchs Ferry Alumni Association, 420 3rd Street SE, Leeds, ND, 58346 or to the Leeds Lutheran WELCA Quilt and Kit Fund 250 1st Street SE Leeds, ND 58346.
Connie Marie Nelson was born Nov. 9, 1953, in Devils Lake, ND, to Roland and Ann (Helgeseth) Nelson.
Connie attended Churchs Ferry Public School, graduating with the class of 1971. She attended the University of North Dakota graduating in 1975 with a major in English and minor in library science. Connie worked 45 years as an educator in North Dakota. She taught English for 17 years in LaMoure and for 28 years taught at North Star in Cando as k-12 librarian and English teacher.
Connie was baptized and confirmed at Zion Lutheran Church, Churchs Ferry and was an active member until Zion closed in 2011 due to the ongoing Devils Lake region flooding. Connie then joined Leeds Lutheran Church. After her retirement in 2020 she became an active member of the Leeds Lutheran Quilters and Leeds Lutheran WELCA.
Connie was a member of Delta Kappa Gamma’s Lambda chapter, Rugby. She served as treasurer for the Churchs Ferry Cemetery board. She was also an active member of the Churchs Ferry Alumni and served as the Churchs Ferry Alumni museum manager.
Connie is survived by her sister Louise, Leeds; Uncle and aunt Robert and Evie Nelson, Harvey; special friend Deanna Dagen, LaMoure; and numerous cousins.
Connie was preceded in death by her parents Roland and Ann Nelson.
