Matthew Edward Nesheim passed away on Friday, Jan. 12, 2024, at the age of 43. He lived in Fargo, ND, with his wife and two sons.

Matthew was born on Oct. 11, 1980, in Mayville, ND. He spent his early childhood years on his family’s farm near Cooperstown, ND. In January 1985, his family moved to a farm near Northwood where he was always good help to his father on the farm even from an early age. Matt attended Northwood Public School from Kindergarten to his graduation in 1999. During school he was active in band, choir, cross country, track, and the FFA.

In the Fall of 1999, Matt began college at Bethany Lutheran in Mankato, MN, where he earned his associate degree. He then attended Moorhead State University, in Moorhead, MN for two years, earning a bachelors degree in Communications. He then spent a year writing as it was his ambition to become a published author.

In 2005, Matthew enlisted in the U.S. Army. In 2007, Matt was deployed to Iraq in a recon company that served in the Bagdad and Mosul areas. In 2009, Matt attained the rank of sergeant in the 82nd Airborne and was deployed to Afghanistan where his unit served as security in a perimeter around Bagram Air Base. In 2010, Matt was honorably discharged from the U.S. Army after 5 years of active service.

On Jan. 2, 2010, he was united in marriage to Kathryn Olson. Matthew and Kathryn initially resided in Milwaukee, WI, later moving to Minneapolis, MN, in 2015 and Fargo, ND in 2021. They had two sons, Thomas born Dec. 20, 2013, and Clayton born July 30, 2017. He dearly loved and was loved by his wife and boys.

Like his father, Matthew was an excellent salesman with a sharp mind for business. While in Milwaukee he frequently ranked at the top of his sales team at US Cellular as well as the John M. Ellsworth Company. He completed an MBA from Villanova in 2018. He’d say, half joking, half serious, that one day he’d own the Minnesota Vikings. He also volunteered with Lino Lakes prison ministries, leading Christian fellowship and Bible studies, while residing in the Minneapolis area.

Matthew was successful in publishing a full novel through Amazon entitled The City Above and Below. He was also writing and publishing a book series called Sable Unlimited through a website called The Royal Road.

Matthew loved children. He was devoted to teaching his sons how to read, throw a football, play card games, catch fish, ride a bike, and anything else they needed to know. He loved playing with his nieces and nephews. Near the end of his life, he discovered a love of coaching park-league flag football.

Matthew is survived by his parents, Edward and Jill Nesheim, his wife Kathryn Nesheim, sons Thomas and Clayton Nesheim, sister Bethany (James) Michaels, brother Timothy (Shera) Nesheim, and nieces and nephews Hannah, Evelyn, Riya, Roland, Arabel, Isha, Elyssa, and Erlend.
