Max Gilbraith, 91, of Fargo, ND, formerly West Fargo, ND, died peacefully Tuesday, Jan. 2, 2024, at Sanford Health in Fargo.

Max Vincent Gilbraith was born Feb. 27, 1932, at Mercy Hospital in Devils Lake, ND to John “Toad” and Blanche Mary (Link) Gilbraith. He grew up on a farm in Crary, ND and attended Crary Public School. He then attended Mayville State College where he received his teachers’ certificate. He taught elementary education, grades 5-8, in Lorraine, ND and Witman, ND.

On Nov. 5, 1952, he married Mary “Jane” Ziegler in Devils Lake, ND. He started working at Gamble Robinson Company as an assistant manager in Fargo, ND, and Anoka, MN. He later became employed by Kraft Foods and Durkee Foods as a Territory Manager. In total, he worked in grocery sales and management for 22 years.

Max and Jane moved to Fargo in 1976. Upon retirement, he went to work for Hall GMC.

He belonged to Knights of Columbus, Elks, Eagles Club and was a member at Holy Cross Catholic Church, West Fargo. Max loved hunting, grilling and spending time with his family. He also enjoyed being part of a weekly coffee club at West Acres Mall.

Max is survived by his wife of 71 years Mary “Jane” Gilbraith; seven children Steven (Mary Beth Burggraff), Isanti, MN, Brian (Cheryl), Billings, MT, Kevin, Coon Rapids, MN, Kim Armbrust, Fargo, ND, Kelly Stone, Tulsa, OK, Joseph, Fargo, ND, Lisa (Keith) Van Dyke, Maple Grove, MN; ten grandchildren Jamie, Shannon, Joshua, Jordan, Adam, Benjamin, Andrew, Matthew, Erin, Tyler; eleven great-grandchildren Everett, Evelynn, Gavin, Gabe, Lucy, Andrew G. Emily, Zoe, Lena, Maeve and Andrew A.; and one great-great-grandchild Charlie. Also by two brothers Laurin Gilbraith and Leon Gilbraith, and two sisters Lavina Burner and Carolyn Held.

Max was preceded in death by his sisters Marjorie Koch, June Braaten, Sylvia Gilbraith; brothers David Gilbraith and Glenn Gilbraith; and one grandson Calvin Armbrust.

Service will be held Spring 2024 with burial in Holy Cross Cemetery, South, Fargo. Due to the service being held at a later date, in lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested at this time.westfuneralhome.com
