Nick worked various jobs in the area until taking off on his own to the oil fields in North Dakota. He then moved on to South Dakota to work on the Oahe Dam. After a bad automobile accident, Nick came back to Devils Lake to mend. There he met his loving wife, Verna Mae Keogh. They were married on Oct. 12, 1963, and would soon have been celebrating 60 years of love and devotion to each other.

After their marriage, Nick went to Hanson’s Mechanical School in Fargo ND. He returned to Devils Lake and worked at Gouldings Oil, Lake Supply Company, and Powell Motors. Nick and Verna made the decision to start farming, rural Webster his in-laws farm in Morris Township and Verna’s grandparents farm in Harding Township, where they raised their family. After retiring, Nick got bored and started working road construction, which he really enjoyed doing.

Nick and Verna went to the Rio Grand Valley in Texas for 19 winters with their camping friends. He was always ready to go in the fall, but always ready to get back to the farm in the spring, getting in a few snowstorms on the way home every time.

Nick enjoyed membership in the Knights of Columbus and was a life member of the Elks and Eagles Lodges.
