Marie Berg, 97, Cando, ND, passed away on Monday, Sep. 18, 2023, at the Elim Care Center in Fargo, ND. Funeral Services will be held on Thursday, Sep. 28, 2023, at 2:00 p.m. at the Cando Lutheran Church in Cando, ND. Visitation will be two hours prior to the service in the church. Burial will be at the I.O.O.F. Cemetery in Cando, ND.
Marie Ellen Krom was born Oct. 31, 1925, in Sarles, ND, to Esther L. (Keim) and Kenneth D. Krom.
In her early years, Marie lived with her family on a farm near Sarles and attended a country school. The family then moved to Cando where she attended Cando Public High School, graduating in 1944.
Marie married Milton (Mike) Berg on Feb. 20, 1948, in the parsonage of the Cando Lutheran Church. Together they raised three children and were married for 65 years until Mike’s death in 2013.
Marie was a big fan of all Minnesota sports but her favorite teams were the Timberwolves and the Twins. She faithfully watched almost every game throughout each season, often keeping notes on the performances of different players. She also enjoyed crossword puzzles, playing Bingo and reading; her favorite author was Louis L’Amour. In her younger years, she would spend time fishing, riding snowmobiles and traveling with her husband and family. After Mike retired in 1985 they became snowbirds, spending their winters in Mesa, AZ, for the next 20 years.
Marie is preceded in death by her parents; brother David Krom and his wife Amelia; and brother Cyril Krom and his wife Susie.
She is survived by her daughter Karen Martz and her husband Lamar, of Cando; daughter Jane Berg, of Fargo; son Douglas Berg and his wife Brenda, of Cando; granddaughter Melissa Martz, of Waconia, MN; granddaughter Amy Martz and her husband Chris Murphy, of Chicago, IL; step-granddaughter Megan Porath, of Mayville, ND; step-great-grandchildren Tyler, Jake and Maci Porath, of Mayville, ND; and ten nieces and nephews.
