Edwin “Ed” Duane Foss, 90, of Fargo, ND, passed away on Tuesday, June 27, 2023, at Edgewood, Fargo, ND.
Ed was born to Edwin and Minne (Christianson) Foss on June 1, 1933, at Mercy Hospital in Devils Lake, ND. Ed went to a rural school for eight years and graduated from Devils Lake High School in 1951 and attended North Dakota State University. After his junior year, the Federal Government had a pending draft, so he enlisted into the Engineering part of the US Army. After three years, including several moves and fourteen months in Korea, he was honorably discharged.
In 1958, Ed married Elsie Moilanen from Devils Lake. The same month, he went into business with Jim Camrud, forming Camrud-Foss Construction Company in Moorhead, MN. Their plan was to stay in business for twenty-five years and sell to two of their employees. In 1983, Ed worked with another contractor and built many condominiums. After ten years, he retired in 1993, at the age of sixty.
Ed used part of his GI Bill to take pilot training and was able to get his private and commercial license. He also received his instrument rating. He bought into an existing company with two of his good friends who owned an airplane. A short time later, he bought a Beachcraft Bonanza A-36. This is a low wing retractable gear plane that would cruise at 200 mph. They made many fishing trips to the Lake of the Woods and several trips to vacation in Arizona and Nevada.
Ed and Elsie were active for many years at the Lutheran Church of the Good Shepherd in Moorhead, MN.
They were blessed with a son, Brian, and a daughter, Vera. Brian died of cancer in 2008.
Ed is survived by his daughter, Vera (Jim) Neiman; brother, Richard (Rita) Foss, Devils Lake, ND; sister, Carolyn (Bernard) Bryl, Tomball, TX; and sister-in-law, Idelle Foss, Devils Lake, ND. He is preceded in death by his beloved wife, Elsie; son, Brian Foss; sister, Mildred (Joe) Herda; brothers, Palmer (Lois), Raymond (Glen), Leslie (Merideth), Llloyd, and Harold (Kurene) Foss.
