Terence Rieder was born in Cando, ND, to Frank and Mary (McCarthy) Rieder on Aug. 9, 1936, along with his twin sister, Mary. Terry grew up on a farm near Egeland, ND. Twelve years later his baby sister, Polly was born. Terry attended schools at Crocus and Egeland. He helped on the family farm and that is where his love of the land began! Terry played guitar and along with his sister, Mary who played accordion, played for dances in their youth. Terry helped build the Cando Farmers Elevator and Cando Schools with his older brother, Dan.

Terence met Arlene in the mid 1950’s while she was employed at the Record Herald. He enlisted in the United States Navy in 1955 and completed basic training in San Diego, CA. Terence returned to ND, on a one month leave to marry Arlene Hoeltl on Aug. 4, 1956. She accompanied Terence to Vallejo, CA, where he was stationed. In August 1957, he was discharged and returned to ND, accompanied by their first baby, Teresa.

Terence worked for Willie and Louise Hoffman at Cando Drycleaners and hauled coal to school and homes. When his father-in-law, Matt Hoeltl passed away in 1958; Terence and Arlene purchased the land and buildings which were homesteaded by the Gullickson Family. The rest of the children were born in Cando; Jo, Stevie, Gina, Becky, Don, Gabe and Shannon. Terence’s Catholic faith was very important to him and he served on Parish Council and ushered at mass. We have memories of going to church layered two deep in the family pickup!

Terence drove school bus for two years and remembered all the families he picked up on Route #2. His interests were “farming, farming and farming!” In the early years there were livestock, including cattle, sheep, hogs and chickens. Summer work included making hay after the crops were seeded and then after that, harvest! We are sure Dad is in Heaven as Stevie asked Dad to send down rain when he got there, and it did rain the next day. Other activities were spending time in nature hunting, fishing and fur trapping. Terence loved driving around in evenings looking at crops and for deer. He never got tired of this and neither do we.

Terence also enjoyed playing whist and pinochle and in later years, gardening, playing farkle, feeding the deer during the winter, watching pigeons and following the stock market. He loved watching the deer, pheasants and wildlife that came through the yard. Dad enjoyed traveling to neighboring states and South Carolina, Arizona, Hawaii and Nevada. He accompanied his uncle, Joe Fox, to Wisconsin several years to get Christmas trees. Terence enjoyed family get togethers, campouts and visiting by the fire pit.

Survivors include his wife of almost 67 years, Arlene; his children, Teresa Mueller, Elk River, MN, Jolene (Larry) Hoffert of Cando, ND, Stephanie Smith of Jamestown, ND, Gina (Doug) Beck of Cando, ND, Rebecca (Martin) Woodcock of Rochester, MN, T.
