Michael A. Grant, 62 of Wahpeton formerly of Belcourt, ND, passed away on Monday, April 17, 2023, at Essentia Medical Center in Fargo.

Michael Alan Grant was born Sept. 21, 1960, in Belcourt, ND to William Vincent Grant and Elsie Grant. Mike was a member of the Turtle Mountain Band of Chippewa and was proud of his native heritage. He attended school in Devils Lake, ND and graduated in 1978 from Central High School. Mike attended NDSCS and earned a degree in Sheet Metal Fabrication and Heating and Cooling.

On May 7, 1982 he married his childhood sweetheart, Gail LaMotte, in Wahpeton, ND. They were blessed with two beautiful daughters, Amber Diana and Bethany Marie and two handsome grandsons, Avery and Ethan Schlueter.

Mike was employed at Circle of Nations school for nearly thirty years and left a legacy with his work. He cared deeply about the preservation of native traditions. He was a gifted craftsman and built frames, custom furniture pieces, little free libraries, shelves and star-quilt holders.

As a friend, father, and husband, Mike was a storyteller with an uncanny sense of humor. For those lucky enough to know him, Mike always offered an open door with a cold one waiting. Many have shared memories by the pool table, camp fire, horseshoe pits, playing darts, or playing slots at the Casino. Mike was an avid outdoorsman and enjoyed hunting, fishing, and trapping. He was a huge fan of the Chicago Blackhawks and spent many nights enjoying UND hockey games with friends and family.

Mike is survived by his wife, Gail LaMotte Grant, daughters Amber (Grant) Schlueter and Bethany Grant (Moses Quinn Jr.), his sister Theresa Grant, mother-in-law Diane Schell, father-in-law Orly Kjelshus (Lorraine), sisters-in-law Debby (Layton) Foltyn and Lisa (Mike) Larson, brothers-in-law David LaMotte, Bucky Kjelshus, Chris Kjelshus, his Springer Spaniel Sophie, and many relatives, nieces/nephews, close neighbors, and special friends.

He was greeted in heaven by his mother, Elsie Grant, his father, William Vincent Grant, brothers Gary, Kenny and Andy, father-in-law Roland LaMotte, special pets Sadie, Sugar, and Black Dog. He survived the loss of many close family members and friends. He will be missed by all who had the pleasure of knowing him.

Funeral Services for Michael will be held on Saturday, April 22, 2023 at the Gilbertson Funeral Home, Devils Lake at 1:00 p.m. Visitation will be at the funeral home beginning at 11:00 a.m. until time of service. Burial will be in the Warwick Cemetery at a later date.
