Mary (Muri) Howen, 87, of Devils Lake, formerly of York, ND, passed away on Tuesday, June 2, 2026, at Altru Hospital, Grand Forks, ND, with her loving family at her side.
Mary was born on Dec. 21, 1938, at York, ND, the daughter of Mons I. and Emma E. (Zeigler) Muri. She grew up in York and attended York Public School.
Mary was united in marriage to Alfred Howen 0n Dec. 27, 1956, and they lived, worked and raised their family in Devils Lake. Alfred worked for the railroad and Mary was employed as a dietary assistant and also a devoted caregiver to many while working at Heartland Care Center and the Odd Fellows Home.
Mary loved music. She loved to dance to music, sing Karaoke, and listen to country western music. Music reflected Mary’s spirit; Lighthearted, loving, caring and free spirited. She was a joy to be around.
Mary was a devoted wife, mother, and grandmother and treasured time spent with family and dear friends.
Mary, forever missed, forever loved, and forever in our hearts.
Mary is survived by her three children and three great grandchildren: Stanley Howen of Lakota ND and his children Kylee Hilliard and Jordan Howen, Janice (Tom) Schlenvogt, Fargo ND and daughter Bethany Schlenvogt: Mary Jo (Randy) Stenslie, Devils Lake ND; four great grandchildren (Kylee’s) Austen, Hannah, Phoebe, and Dawson; several nieces, nephews and cousins.
Mary was preceded in death by her parents, husband Alfred on Aug. 3, 1994, son David Howen, siblings Lillian, Melvin, Manfred, Alvin, John, James, and Elmer Muri.
Funeral Services for Mary will be held on Friday, June 12, 2026, at 1:00 p.m. at the Gilbertson Funeral Home, Devils Lake ND with burial in the Devils Lake Cemetery.
