Duane Theodore Nelson, age 89, passed away peacefully on Saturday, March 21, 2026, surrounded by his loving family.
Duane was born on July 3, 1936, on the Homestead to Ragnar and Fredia Nilson. The family name was later changed from Nilson to Nelson, a heritage Duane carried with quiet pride.
He completed his education through the eighth grade, graduating with top honors—a reflection of his sharp mind, work ethic, and determination, qualities that would define him throughout his life.
On June 17, 1959, Duane married Bernadine Ann Frederick in Tokio, N.D. Their 66 years of marriage were a testament to deep devotion, companionship, and enduring love. Together, they built a life rooted in faith, family, and service, opening their home and their hearts to many foster children over the years. They also adopted one child, a true expression of the profound generosity and love they shared with others.
A devoted member of St. Michael’s Catholic Church in St. Michael, N.D., Duane lived his faith quietly yet steadfastly.
Duane’s early working years included time as a well driller, followed by several years as an associate at Home of Economy. He also served as a Benson County Tax Assessor and Benson County Census Field Representative, roles he modestly considered “hobbies,” though they reflected his genuine desire to give back to others and stay connected to his community.
His true legacy began on December 3, 1975, when he joined the Devils Lake Public School System. For more than four decades, he faithfully served in maintenance—often referring to himself with a smile as a “jack of all trades, master of none”—and drove a school bus. His steady presence and kind spirit touched generations of students and staff. Duane retired in June 2019, leaving behind a remarkable legacy of dedication, humility, and service to his community.
Duane found joy in the simple things: transporting kids, driving “Little Blue,” and helping others with their projects. He was always ready with tools, time, and a warm smile—eager to lend a hand wherever he was needed.
Above all, Duane treasured his family. “The things that make life most worth living are my wife, our children, all our grandchildren, and great‑grandchildren. They are all so loving, caring, beautiful, and willing to help. We are so lucky to have such a wonderful and kind family.” These words capture the heart of who he was—a man whose greatest joy came from the love he gave and received.
Duane is survived by his loving wife, Bernadine, and children: Joan (Terry) Belgarde, St. Michael, ND; Gail (Randy) Severinson, Grand Forks, ND; Allan (Marla) Nelson, St. Michael, ND; Mary (James) Langley, Warwick, ND; Karla (Kelvin) Mack, Hatton, ND; Kristi Hartl, Devils Lake, ND; Kimberly (David) Brown, St. Michael, ND; and Kevin (Janet) Nelson, East Grand Forks, MN.
He is also survived by 22 grandchildren and 28 great‑grandchildren, who each brought him immense joy, and many nieces, nephews and their families.
Duane leaves behind two siblings Charles (Helen) Nelson, Devils Lake, ND and Evelyn Rasmussen, Tacoma, WA; and brother-in-law Gary (Gail) Frederick, Warwick, ND.
He was preceded in death by his beloved daughter Jacqueline, an infant son, Larry, his son‑in‑law Jay Hartl, his parents, 13 siblings, father-in-law and mother-in-law Edwin and Martha Frederick.
Duane will be remembered for his gentle spirit, humble strength, unwavering work ethic, and the kindness he shared so freely. His legacy lives on in the many lives he touched.
