According to Detective Samantha Flores of the Devils Lake Police Department, “on 09/08/2025, at around 11 p.m., officers were dispatched to a residence in the area of the 300 block of 15th Ave. SE for a report of a 911 hang up call.”
“The Devils Lake Police Department responded and an investigation was initiated. As a result of the investigation, a search warrant was obtained and executed. In the attempt to execute the search warrant, the subject, an off-duty Devils Lake Police Officer barricaded himself inside the home with a weapon.”
“The Devils Lake Police Department and Ramsey County Sheriff’s Office negotiated with the subject for several hours. On 09/09/2025, shortly after 9:30 a.m., a weapon was discharged and the subject was transported to CHI St. Alexius Devils Lake Hospital for medical attention.”
“There is an ongoing investigation being conducted by the North Dakota Bureau of Criminal Investigation.”
Update
This is an official update regarding the critical incident on 09/09/25 that involved off-duty Devils Lake Police Officer Rey Hennen.
According to a release provided by DLPD Detective Samantha Flores, “During the investigation on the morning of 09/09/25, Hennen had threatened to shoot himself at his home. While he was making these threats, his children were present in the house. They were successfully removed by law enforcement without incident. Neighbors in the surrounding area [15th Ave. SE] were requested to evacuate the area or shelter in place during the incident.
“An arrest warrant for Terrorizing was issued by the Ramsey County States Attorney’s Office. Terrorizing is a Class C Felony. After the arrest warrant was issued, the Devils Lake Police Department attempted to arrest Hennen. As Hennen was approached by Officers, he suffered a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Hennen was placed under arrest and transported to CHI St. Alexius in Devils Lake for medical attention for a non-life-threatening injury.
“Hennen’s employment with the City of Devils Lake has been terminated effective 09/10/2025.
“This is an ongoing investigation being conducted by the North Dakota Bureau of Criminal Investigation”
