The Dakota Prairie 4th Graders wanted to give back to their community, so they brainstormed ways they could. They really wanted a project that would incorporate the 4R’s (Respect, Relationships, Rigor, and Responsibility.) we have been working on in our school.
They came up with a Giving Hearts Chore Project, here they would do chores to raise money for the Nelson County Health Foundation. They really liked the idea of having their donation matched, so Feb. 6, 2023, was our deadline. They talked about setting a goal they wanted to reach or exceed, then what chores they could do, and a spreadsheet to hold them accountable.
In the two weeks, they were responsible, had rigor, were respectful, and were excited to build more relationships with family and the community. With a goal of $10 each so a total of $180, they reached their goal and ended the project with a $320 donation, which we discussed was really $640 with matching funds.
When discussing how the project affected them, they all said it felt so good to work hard for the money and then give it to someplace like the Foundation that affects so many and even them. They talked about going to the clinic for appointments, the hospital for emergencies, and the nursing home to visit family and friends.
Editor’s comment: “Congratulations to all the Dakota Prairie students who participated in this venture and to the proud teacher who made it all come together to benefit her class!”
