CMS Principal Dan Kaffar recognizing Cory Collison as the teacher of the quarter

The DLPS Board held a regular meeting on Monday, Jan 20. Here are some highlights:

Superintendent Ned Clooten talked about the Choice Ready component for the high school. Choice Ready measures growth for North Dakota high schools, as indicated by student readiness upon high school graduation. The goal is to have graduation numbers from 71% in August 2023 to 91% of August 2028. The targets are 71% at the baseline, 75% in 2024, 79% in 2025, 83% in 2026, 87% in 2027, and working to 91% in 2028.

Susie Kenner, executive director of the Devils Lake Chamber of Commerce, spoke about the grant they received last year to tackle regional workforce issues. Part of the grant was used for a summer job fair at the high school. About 160 people went to all the booths of which there were 39 (including the DLJ). A job shadow program for sophomores launched on Sept. 30 there 85 students at the high school who completed the job shadow. 20 different business videos are going to highlight the businesses in the area (filmed by Noah Clooten). Another job fair will happen on March 26.

Cory Collison was recognized as the teacher of the quarter. Collison is a seventh-grade teacher at CMS and has been there for 9 years. CMS Principal Dan Kaffar described Collison as a “natural leader who consistently goes above and beyond to support our school and students beyond the classroom.” Collison said, “It’s one of the higher honors that you can receive.”

After the meeting, Clooten spoke to the Journal about his outlook for 2025. Clooten said that the AG building has a completion date of June 30 and the roof will be on as of this printing.
