In 1975, the Devils Lake Area Foundation (DLAF) was founded as a charitable community trust. It is structured so that representatives from the local community decide how the earnings from charitable endowments are to be used. The members of the Trustees Committee are appointed by various community organizations and each member serves a 5-year term. The 2022 members were Dave Fix (Ministerial Association), Dawn Merten (Kiwanis), Todd Thompson (Rotary), Terra Eriksson (Chamber of Commerce), Christy Remmick (Forward DL), Stacey Heggen (Lake Region Community Fund), and Kelly Swenseth (District Court Judge appointed).

The Committee met in December 2022 to review and award grant applications. These grants are made possible by donations from charitable-minded individuals and organizations who give to DLAF. These donations are invested to generate earnings that can be distributed for worthy charitable purposes that advance the civic, educational, and cultural life in the Devils Lake area. As these gifts are accumulated in the DLAF endowment funds, DLAF is able to help the community more with each passing year. To date DLAF has awarded $2,053,509.89 to the community.

This awarding period, DLAF received distributed $27,703.04 to nine organizations. Some of the recipients of this semi-annual awarding were Senior Meals and Services for snow blower for sidewalks, sewing and quilting machines for the Devils Lake Public School (DLPS), Central Middle School FACS Program, and classroom rug and teach workstation for College Care for Kids. The Committee also funded important projects where one may not see the physical improvements like food for Senior Meals and Services.
