The North Dakota Highway Patrol urges drivers to exercise caution on roadways due to slippery conditions caused by recent weather conditions.
As temperatures are near freezing, frost is accumulating on road surfaces, particularly on bridge decks and overpasses, which become slippery due to condensation. Combined with thick fog and or strong winds, these conditions have created slippery roads resulting in multiple property crashes and cars leaving the roadway and sliding into ditches.
Key Safety Tips for Drivers:
• Slow Down: Reduced visibility from fog, wind and icy conditions on the roads require extra stopping distance. Lower your speed, especially when approaching bridges, overpasses, and intersections.
• Increase Following Distance: Allow extra space between your vehicle and the one in front of you, as braking distances can be longer on slippery surfaces.
• Use Fog Lights: If you encounter dense fog, use your vehicle’s fog lights if available. Avoid using high beams, which can worsen visibility.
• Stay Alert: Be aware of areas prone to icing, including bridge decks, overpasses, and elevated surfaces.
• Avoid Sudden Maneuvers: Sudden braking or sharp turns on icy roads can lead to loss of control. If you begin to skid, steer gently and avoid slamming on the brakes.
Southeast Regional Sergeant Kristjan Helgoe stated, “We are asking everyone to please drive with caution, especially in areas of fog, blowing snow, or icy conditions which can catch even experienced drivers off guard. Take your time and make safety your top priority.”
