When you go to City Plaza for your daily cup of coffee, you might notice some new decor. Heck, you’ll even see a new name. That’s right. Dunn Brothers Coffee is no longer the coffee spot at City Plaza. Welcome Bully Brew which officially opened on Monday.

Bully Brew in Devils Lake is the ninth store to be opened by the company. The person behind the Bully Brew name is Sandi Luck. A former professor of marketing at UND, she has been in the coffee business for 17 years. First starting with coffee kiosks, then moving up to a storefront.

If your first question is about where the name comes from, it’s not because the baristas bully you. Bully Brew comes from Luck’s English Bulldog, Elvis. While he has passed away, his face is printed on the hot drink holders.

Luck said that while she is not from Devils Lake, getting a team from Devils Lake was important. “I think that with a local coffee shop, you’re finding people dedicated to the community,” she said. “I find a management team that is committed to this community.”

She said that events will be planned for the future that could include painting parties, which happen at the other Bully Brew shops. Luck said they also getting ready for the September 28 Fall Fiesta. “We’re excited for Fall Fiesta. We will have fall drinks, we will decorate this place, and create a welcoming environment.

What makes coffee special for Luck is that makes “the connection of people.”

“We need each other as people.” She said she enjoys seeing “People were just having great conversations and appreciates when people come in and do work.”

If you’re a senior, consider yourself lucky as from 7-11 a.m. Monday to Friday, seniors can get coffee for $1 with an in-house mug. This special was motivated by Luck’s dad.

“When I first started, he said my coffee is too expensive. You got to lower your price.” Luck said if her dad brought his buddies they could have coffee for $1. And he did so leading to the $1 special.

“It’s something we give to our community to people who have taught us a lot in life.”

Bully Brew is located at City Plaza and is open from 7 a.m.-4 p.m. Mon-Fri and 8 a.m.-4 p.m. Sat. & Sun.
