Gov. Doug Burgum has declared July as Lakes Appreciation Month in North Dakota. The governor’s office yesterday sent out a release recognizing the approximately 4,500 lakes across the state. 413 of them are accessible to the public. The governor also recognized the economic, tourist, and recreational activity that the lakes provide.
Devils Lake (hence the name) is renowned for its lakes that surround the city. People from all over come to fish for perch, walleye, white bass and pike all year round. The lakes also provide boating opportunities, especially in the summer. Fishing tournaments are held throughout the year including the famous ice fishing tournament in the winter.
“[The lakes] are one of the top recreated lakes in the state all the way from anglers, boaters, and folks that just want to go kayak,” said Division of Water Quality official Joshua Wert about the lakes in the city. ” On the recreation side, it is one of the top recreated lakes from fishing to hunting to general recreation boating.”
As always, be safe and responsible when fishing and boating out on the lakes!
