Thursday, June 6 was the 10th anniversary of the Hope Center. To celebrate, the non-profit organization opened its door to the public and served food. Mary Ann’s ice cream truck came by to also give out free ice cream. A raffle was also done giving away gift cards to Leevers and unopened kitchen appliance collections.
“I love the turnout. We hoped for 50, planned for 75, and exceeded 100,” said board member Theresa Leiphon. “We’re happy the community came out to celebrate our anniversary with us.”
Leiphon said that the organization has put a grant to the Devils Lake Area Foundation to “make some improvements to the lobby and replace a broken down service desk.” She added, “We just have to keep being funded by donations and grants to maintain this whole building to keep it in good shape.”
During a city commission on May 20, Mayor Jim Moe declared June 6 Hope Center Hunger Awareness Day.
“We really appreciate the mayor and city commission unanimously to proclaim June 6 as Hope Center Hunger Awareness Day,” Leiphon said.
The Hope Center is always looking for volunteers to help pass out food in the pantry, unload food to be stored, and other types of volunteers. “We appreciate the financial support from the community and we hope it continues because hunger doesn’t go away,” Leiphon said.
