The Devils Lake School Board held a regular meeting on Monday, March 11. Here are some highlights from the meeting.
The board stated they have $19,365089.61 of total funds on hand.
Students from DECA (Distributive Education Clubs of America), a not-for-profit career and technical student organization, appeared and spoke to the board seeking more funds. DECA members brought their trophies and spoke about the achievements they got at state conference. The students were seeking $1000 more per member which would help go to travel. Superintendent Ned Clooten commended the students on their hard work. “It’s something near and dear to my heart. You guys worked hard and continue to do so.” However Clooten said he couldn’t make a decision without potentially affecting the other school groups, Skills USA and FBLA and would look at what other schools contribute to their DECA programs. The board tabled a decision for the next meeting.
So far $477,194 has been raised for the AG building. Clooten said they would to get back to the state as the state said they would pull their matching funds. The school board needs to get $1,241,074 and the state would provide $1,722, 566. Clooten said, “not having an AG program is a big hole.” The board unanimously voted to commit the $763,880 needed to get the state to match.
The total amount currently for the additional construction to Prairie View Elementary School and repairs to Central Middle School will cost $30,789,620. $3 million will be used from the ESSER (Elementary and Secondary School Emergency Relief) Funds. The referendum will ask for $27,789,620. Clooten said they were talking about doing an alumni drive as well to help raise funds. The board unanimously approved both the initial resolution for general obligation for school building bond and the special vote.
Crystal Everssvik was approved to become the principal of Sweetwater Elementary School.
