The Devils Lake School Board held a meeting on Tuesday, Feb. 27. Here are some of the highlights from that meeting:

For the boiler room replacement for CMS, the school board came to the conclusion the “hot water UV with chilled water cooling” was the option as it was the “best balance between cost and also best choice.” The total cost will be $2,902,631.

Prairie View Elementary is looking to get an additional four new classrooms, a new music space, a new gym with a full-size competition court, and renovation of the air conditioning and the cafeteria. The total amount for this new project would be $13,151,625 and would be overseen by Icon Architectural Group.

Repairing and upgrading CMS has been a goal of Superintendent Ned Clooten. The repairs would include new ceiling tiles/lights throughout the building, fixing the roof, new carpet, and durable tiles in the classroom, opening the media center to make it more accessible, renovating toilets, adding a second elevator, and making the building ADA-compliant. The estimated cost would be $13,004,946. In 2022, a special school referendum was held that would have allowed the district to make those repairs but it was not passed.

Boys’ and girls’ golf will be making a return soon. Jason Wiber, Devils Lake High School Activities Director, made his case to the school board to bring golf back as a sport for grades 7-12. “It’s something our kids can do lifelong,” he said. “With the right coaches, it can make a difference.” He pointed out that wrestling initially did not have many competitors, but when the proper coaches, more students took part in the sport. The board approved a probational funding of $5000 for both boys’ and girls’ golf.
