The Ramsey County Commission met for a regular meeting at 8 am on Tuesday, Dec. 5. First on the agenda was the annual reorganization of the board, where current Chairperson Jeff Frith was unanimously appointed Chairperson for the next year, and Commissioner Lee Gessner was appointed Vice-Chairperson. After dividing commissioner portfolios, the commission approved the last meeting’s minutes, financials, and treasurer’s checks. Sara Laite was present to give an update on the many events and initiatives Ramsey County Extension has going on at the end of the year and beginning of 2024. Following this, the meeting’s agenda was approved.

Highway Superintendent Kevin Fieldsend had various motions approved, including pay estimates for engineering and culverts. A county truck was also declared surplus to be included at auction. County Recorder Beverly Bachmeier requested a renewed agreement with an independent contractor to index and file handwritten county records which was approved unanimously. She also received approval for travel expenses in June of 2024.

Following updates from the Ramsey County Water District, Chairperson Frith announced that representatives from FEMA will be in Devils Lake on Tuesday, December 12 between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. to go over floodplain administration. All are welcome to attend the session in the basement of the courthouse. Ramsey County townships should plan to attend. The commission then approved a number of board appointments and an abatement.

County Auditor Kandy Christopherson requested, per century code, election polling places, vote by mail, and an increase in hourly wages paid to temporary election workers. All were approved unanimously. The commission will meet at 4 p.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 19 as opposed to 5:30 p.m., and county employees will have December 22 off since Christmas Eve falls on a Sunday, and that is usually a paid holiday.
