Central Middle School held its annual Salute to Veterans Program on Thursday, November 10. Students and members of the public attended a ceremony both to remember, honor, and pay tribute to those who are serving or have served.
The guest speaker was Maj. Brett Nelson from Camp Grafton. CMS 8th graders participating in the Voice of Democracy or a similar essay contest presented their essays on the importance of Veteran’s Day.
For the first time, a missing man table was set up during the ceremony. Members of the DLHS JROTC took turns setting down different objects on the table including an empty chair, lighting a candle, a single rose, and other items that each have different symbolism.
A slideshow was shown of photos of students and employees at the school whose family members served or are serving. Throughout the ceremony, the grades 7-8 musical groups performed various patriotic songs including “The Star Spangled Banner” and “Johnny Comes Marching Home.”
After the ceremony was done everyone was invited to a lunch in the cafeteria where students, teachers, and members of the community all sat together to not only eat, but remember those who serve now and in the past.
