Have you ever looked up at the sky and wondered if “we are alone?” Well, we may not be. Or maybe it’s all just secret military aircraft. With all the news about Congress and the UFO hearings, it was a great time to hear from someone who has written about the top secret military base Area 51. Writer Dwight Zimmerman, who is from Devils Lake but lives in Brooklyn, NYC, gave a lecture at Lake Region State College last Tuesday to talk about the famous highly guarded military base. He is the author of the 2014 book “Area 51: The Graphic History of America’s Most Secret Military Installation.”

Zimmerman described Area 51 by quoting British Prime Minister Winston Churchill when he described the Soviet Union. “Area 51 a riddle, wrapped in a mystery, inside an enigma,” Zimmerman told the audience. “I would add that finding out the truth about Area 51 is less the metaphorical, peeling away layers of an onion than it is trying to undo a Gordian knot.”

During the presentation, Zimmerman showed photos and drawings related to Area 51 and at the end did a Q&A. When asked if he believes that there is life outside our planet, Zimmerman had a pragmatic answer. “Mathematically they exist. It’s impossible to think Earth is the only planet in all these galaxies and universes to have intelligent life,” he said. “There are other intelligent civilizations on other planets. It’s a mathematical certainty. Now whether or not they have visited us that’s a separate subject entirely.”
