While the auto tour route and the overlook loop will be closed for the winter, the main road from the Hwy 57 entrance to the visitor center remains open through the winter.

The walking trails near the visitor center are accessible year round, as long as weather and snow cover permits. Plan to join the Friends group In January and February for snowshoeing. Snowshoeing is open to the public on select dates in January and February, with free snowshoe rental for all ages.

It’s been another busy season at White Horse Hill, with thousands of visitors from across the United States and beyond.

The Friends of White Horse Hill organization commemorated 25 years of service this year, hosting large public events in June and July, and the FOCUS Photography Club and the US Fish and Wildlife Service collaborated to create a full color 16-month photography and phenology calendar.

The calendar, for the months of September 2023 through December 2024, features photos taken within the White Horse Hill National Game Preserve near Devils Lake. The phenology entries give usual dates of peak color in the refuge, or when to expect bison calves to arrive, elk to be bugling, and other things to look forward to that occur each year in the refuge.

Friends of White Horse Hill is a non-profit organization whose mission is to ‘promote an understanding and appreciation of the natural environment and history of White Horse Hill National Game Preserve’. The Friends group operates the Nature Store within the visitor center and plans and sponsors events throughout the year.

The organization is already looking forward to activities and plans for trail improvements to occur in the 2024 season. You can help by supporting the purpose of the Friends of White Horse Hill.
