On Monday, the Devils Lake School board met to discuss important matters in the district.
Angel Chen, of grade 12, was sworn in to be the student representative. Chen is very involved in school activities. She contributed to the North Dakota Junior Duck Stamp Program and won the Runner-up Best of Show award in 2022.
Kim Krogfoss, principal of Minnie H Kindergarten Center, presented the school’s statistics, as well breakdown of developing students. Krogfoss stressed the “community and family engagement” with the Kiwanis Club coming in to read to the students. DLHS and college students also come to interact with the students. Krogfoss also said as part of their strategic plan this month students are working on team building and collaboration during “genius hour.” Genius hour is when students in the classroom are allowed to explore their own passions and wonders for about 1 hour per week. Students start with “I like,” “I wish,” and “I wonder” and they draw out their wonders.
Krogfoss also said that during the first 30 days, social and emotional learning is focused on with little academics. Students learn about routines and procedures; heavy on emotional learning, playing games, and working with each other to foster positive connections with one another
The board unanimously approved the 2023-2024 budget.
The board tabled a decision for the next meeting on the decision to continue the transportation agreement with St. Joseph’s School. SJS rents Devils Lake Public School buses to bus some of their own students to and from school. There was a dispute among the board about whether to charge per student or adjust the price to charge per family.
Christa Brodina, technology director of Lake Area Career & Technology Center, got unanimous approval from the board for future projects of the construction class. The class will build a house, trailer, sheds, outbuildings, and other projects for the community as requested.
