Senior Haylee Carlson's goal sends Devils Lake to the state tournament semifinals.
Haylee Carlson got an assist from freshman Abby Reule with 5:48 on the clock in the fourth overtime to lift the Devils Lake Firebirds to the 2-1 win over Grand Forks Knightriders Thursday in the quarterfinals of the North Dakota High School Athletic Association girls hockey state tournament from the Farmers Union Insurance Arena in Fargo.
With the win, the Firebirds advanced to Friday's semifinal against top seeded Fargo Davies. The last time the two teams met was a week ago when the Firebirds and Eagles played to a 1-all tie in regulation but Davies came away with the victory in a shootout.
The Firebirds and Knightriders played to a scoreless first period but a goal by Shaley Richards 13:08 in the second period gave Grand Forks the lead. Richards' goal was assisted by Kylie Autrey and Lauren Robinson.
The Firebirds countered in the third period, when Ashlyn Abrahamson got an assist from Kaylie Klemetsrud for the power play goal after both Hannah Gray and Megan Jacobson were sent to the box for holding and slashing respectively.
The game remained tied at 1 until Carlson's goal after nearly 90 minutes of play.
Molly Black had 49 saves for the Firebirds who were outshot 50-41 by the Knightriders.
