Monica Nelson, 94, of Devils Lake, ND, passed away on Tuesday, Feb. 18, 2020, at Eventide Heartland Care Center, Devils Lake.

Monica Nelson, 94, of Devils Lake, ND, passed away on Tuesday, Feb. 18, 2020, at Eventide Heartland Care Center, Devils Lake. Mass of Christian Burial was held on Tuesday, Feb. 25 at 10 a.m. at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Devils Lake with Reverend Steven Wirth celebrating the Mass. Burial will be in St. Joseph’s Catholic Cemetery. Visitation was held at the Gilbertson Funeral Home, Devils Lake on Monday, Feb, 24 from 3 until 5:30 p.m. with a Rosary and Scripture Service at 5:30 p.m. Visitation on Tuesday was at the church one hour prior to the funeral Mass. Monica Schwan was born on Feb. 16, 1926, at Berwick, ND, the daughter of Denis and Barbara (Volk) Schwan. She received her education at Berwick, later moving to Cando, ND, with the family. After moving to Devils Lake, Monica met and married Melford A. “Poncho” Nelson on Feb. 17, 1947, in St. Joseph Catholic Church. They established their home in Devils Lake, where they lived, worked and raised their family through the years. Melvin died on Sept. 25, 1998. Monica worked for 40 years in the Lake Region, including Manns Shoe Department, National Foods, City of Devils Lake as a Police Matron, Devils Lake Daily Journal and Sioux Manufacturing in Fort Totten, ND. She was active in St. Joseph Church, Altar Society, St. Patricia Circle and the Catholic Society of Foresters. She also enjoyed membership in the VFW Auxiliary. She was a very talented seamstress, sewing clothes for her children for many years. She also kept busy doing crossword puzzles, playing BINGO and knitting. Monica’s loving family include; her daughter, Terry Lynn Uhlman and fiancé, Brian Krawczeski, Dickinson, TX; granddaughters, twins, Jennifer and Angela Dahlen and twins, Kelly Bryant and Kristie Shaffley; two great-grandchildren; sisters, Frances Schwan, Devils Lake and Bertha Schell, Bismarck, ND; brothers, Maurice (Rosemary) Schwan, Devils Lake and Simon Schwan, Michigan, ND; many nieces, nephews and their families. She was preceded in death by; her parents; husband, Melford; infant son, Theodore Schwan; daughter, Rosella “Nancy” Young; siblings, Vincent Schwan, David Schwan, Al Schwan, Otillia Schwan, Mathilda Burkholder, Mary Lauinger, Margaret Brinster, Sr. Barbara Marie Schwan; and two sisters in infancy.
