Joseph Leslie Brown Jr., “ Wakiŋyaŋtoŋwaŋpi S’a Hoksina (Red Lightning Boy), 67, of Spirit Lake Nation, ND, passed away on Thursday, Jan. 30, 2020, in Sumterville, Florida.

Joseph Leslie Brown Jr., “ Wakiŋyaŋtoŋwaŋpi S’a Hoksina (Red Lightning Boy), 67, of Spirit Lake Nation, ND, passed away on Thursday, Jan. 30, 2020, in Sumterville, Florida. A Wake for Joseph will be held on Thursday, Feb. 13, 2020 at St. Michael’s Recreation Center beginning at 5 p.m. with a Prayer Service at 7 p.m. The procession to St. Michael will leave at 4:30 p.m. on Thursday from City Plaza in Devils Lake, ND. Funeral Services will be on Friday, Feb. 14 at 10 a.m. at the St. Michael’s Recreation Center with Father Paul Schuster officiating. Burial will be at a later date in St. Michael’s Cemetery. Joseph Leslie Brown Jr. was born on May 23, 1952, at Fort Totten, ND, the son of Joseph Brown Sr. and Margaret Jones. He attended school at Little Flower in St. Michael, Wahpeton, ND, and Colorado. Joseph enjoyed beading, singing and dancing at powwows. Joseph loved his family with all his heart. Joseph is survived by his loving family. His children, Morning Star, Estelle, Geraldine and Jerry; adopted son, Jerrelle; sisters, Doris Longie, Dianne Jackson and Charlene Hall; adopted sister, Corrine Brown; adopted brother, Valentino White; his auntie, Violet Smith; several grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews. Joseph was preceded in death by; his parents; maternal grandmother, Mary Louise SwiftEagle; paternal grandparents, Henry and Winifred Brown; brothers, Jerome Bear, Solomon Ross and Nathan “Buck” Jones; aunts, Sylvia Brown and Marie Brown; uncles, Alfred Brown, Pat Brown and Elmer Brown; niece, Wanda Jackson; and nephew, Samuel Jackson. Active Pallbearers for Joseph will be: Lee Jackson, Dana Jackson, Kalem Jackson, Leslie “Sonny” Jackson, Sam Merrick Sr., Duane Jackson Jr. and Jerrelle Joshua. Honorary Bearers are all of Joseph’s family and friends. Music will be provided by Tony and Vina McDonald and the Lake Region Singers.
