Isabel Thomson, 105, of Devils Lake, ND, formerly of Southam, ND, passed away on Thursday, Aug. 22, 2019, at the Lakota Good Samaritan Society Care Center with her family at her bedside.
Isabel Thomson, 105, of Devils Lake, ND, formerly of Southam, ND, passed away on Thursday, Aug. 22, 2019, at the Lakota Good Samaritan Society Care Center with her family at her bedside. Funeral Services for Isabel will be held on Wednesday, Aug. 28 at 1 p.m. at the Gilbertson Funeral Home Chapel, Devils Lake with Reverend Lori Broschat officiating. Isabel will be laid to rest in the Devils Lake Cemetery. Visitation will be held on Tuesday, Aug. 27 from 3 until 5:30 p.m. and continue on Wednesday from 10 a.m. until time of service at the Gilbertson Funeral Home. Isabel Stewart, daughter of George and Amy (Nixon) Stewart, was born on Aug. 6, 1914, on the family farm in Noonan Township, Ramsey County, ND. She was the eldest of four daughters. Isabel was baptized in the Presbyterian faith and maintained that faith throughout her life. She attended Southam School and graduated from Southam High School. Isabel then began working on a cook car for area threshing crews for several years. Isabel was united in marriage to her high school sweetheart, Floyd Thomson, on Christmas Eve, Dec. 24, 1936. They were the third generation Stewarts to marry on Christmas Eve. The couple farmed in the Warwick, ND, area until 1941 when they moved to Eugene, Oregon. A few years later they returned to a farm in the Crocus/Egeland area and then in 1946 moved to the Thomson farm at Southam and would live, farm together side-by-side and raise their family through the years. Floyd died on Jan. 8, 1983. In 1984, Isabel moved to Devils Lake and would call it home the rest of her life. Isabel was a devoted wife and mother and she had a passion for cooking and caring for others. She was the chief cook for Floyd’s custom combining crew until 1972. She worked as a cook for the Baker Rest Home and later for the Good Samaritan Center. She was a faithful member of the Nixon Township Board, serving as township clerk for over fifty years. Isabel was a member of the Southam Presbyterian Ladies Aid and Birthday Club. After moving to Devils Lake she became a member of the Westminister Bible Study group. Isabel enjoyed the art of embroidery her entire life and she shared her beautiful creations with family and friends. She also enjoyed other needlework crafts including counted cross stitch. For 22 plus years, Isabel was a dedicated volunteer for RSVP. (Retired Senior Volunteer Program). Isabel experienced many joys, challenges, and trials in her 105 years, but she kept her faith, she never faltered in her love for her family and cared for others in her own special way by cooking and baking their favorites any chance she could. She will be so very missed by all who knew and loved her. Isabel is survived by her loving family. Her children, Glenna Schwab and significant other, Allen Adahl, Devils Lake, Terry Thomson and his wife, Diane, Southam, and Lois Steinhaus and her husband, Clark, also of Devils Lake; grandchildren, Sandy (Larry) Rohlf, Cris (Scott) Stokke, Lisa Berg, Jamie (Shayla) Thomson, Randy (Carlee) Thomson, Amy (Mike) Swehla, Jeff (Melissa) Steinhaus and Jeremy (Jen) Steinhaus; sixteen great-grandchildren, Derek, Jessica, Brian, Brady, Tyler, Tallen, Baylee, Ashlynn, Brant, Kaleb, Kole, Tate, Weston, Sydney, Casia and Nate; and several nieces and nephews. Pallbearers will be: her four granddaughters and four grandsons. Honorary pallbearers are: her great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by; her husband, Floyd; daughter, Lee Halvorson; son-in-law, Delano Halvorson; daughter-in-law, Arlene Thomson; and sisters and brothers-in-law, Georgina and Gerald Kunkel, Mabel and Loren Kunkel and Leila and Virgil Nelson; and her parents.
