Gregory G. ‘Bates’ Hoffner, ‘Wambdi Dutc’ (Red Eagle), 67, of Fort Totten, ND, and formerly of Esmond, ND, passed away Sunday, Aug. 11, 2019, at his home.
Gregory G. ‘Bates’ Hoffner, ‘Wambdi Dutc’ (Red Eagle), 67, of Fort Totten, ND, and formerly of Esmond, ND, passed away Sunday, Aug. 11, 2019, at his home. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday, Aug. 16 at the St. Boniface Catholic Church in Esmond with Fr. Bernard Pfau celebrating mass. Visitation will take place Thursday, Aug. 15 at the St. Boniface Catholic Church from 3 to 5 p.m. followed by Rosary and Vigil service. Visitation will continue one hour prior to the service at the church. Burial will be at the Devils Lake Cemetery in Devils Lake, ND. Casket Bearers are: Toby Hoffner, Terance Hoffner, Jerald Hoffner, Todd Hoffner, Steven Hoffner and Ryan Hoffner. Honorary Casket Bearers are: Shane Eback, Michael Pacheco Jr., Dion Pacheco, Sheldon Brownshield, Delmer Bernard, Richard Brownshield, Daelynn Pacheco, Bryant Brownshield, Shaquille DuBois, Tannor Dauphinais, Angelina Pacheco, Richard Brownshield Jr., Ty Dauphinais, Akasha Pacheco, Eric DuBois and Antone Eback. Gregory George Hoffner was born March 11, 1952, to Leo and Arlene (Brown) Hoffner in Maddock. He attended the Esmond Public School, graduating with the class of 1970. Greg furthered his education, attending Lake Region State College for a year. He was married in 1971 and welcomed three children: Jennifer, Toby and Monte. Greg’s life-long love for farming began at the age of nine, when his father started him working on the tractor at the family farm. He worked for various farmers around the Benson County area, most recently being Conrad Adahl and his brother, Mickey. He also worked for Zimmer Sanitation, Schwan Whole Sale and Max Bar. Greg had a great sense of humor and a big heart. His family was most important to him and Greg dedicated the last four years providing continuous care to his mother and father. Greg was an avid sports fan and liked watching the Minnesota Vikings, the Minnesota Twins and the Mankato Mavericks. He had a passion for Slow-Pitch Softball and enjoyed being on the Mayor Bar team, the Burly Bears team and the Black Hills Flyway team (comprised of Hoffner brothers and cousins). Greg also enjoyed playing Pinochle, Billiards, baking brownies, frying eggs and watching Wheel of Fortune and The Price Is Right. Greg is survived by; his wife, Lorna; children, Jennifer and Toby; parents, Leo and Arlene (Brown) Hoffner; step-children, Trina and family, Kevin (Dani) and family, Clarise (Delmer) and family, Mike (Taylor) and family, Dion and family; siblings, Bernadette (Vern) Roller of Bismarck, ND, Terence (Tracy) Hoffner of Algona, WA, Jerald (Karla) Hoffner of West Fargo, ND, and Todd (Melodee) Hoffner of Eagle Lake, MN; sister-in-law, Karen Hoffner of Maddock; numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by; his son, Monte Hoffner; brother, Michael ‘Mickey’ Hoffner; mother-in-law, Sylvia Brownshield; grandparents, George and Elizabeth Hoffner and Alfred and Mabel Brown; niece, Nicole Roller.
