Marie Wurgler Berg, 97, of Phoenix, Ariz., formerly of Starkweather, ND, passed away on July 24, 2019, at Sunnybrook Living Care Center in Fairfield, Iowa.

Marie Wurgler Berg, 97, of Phoenix, Ariz., formerly of Starkweather, ND, passed away on July 24, 2019, at Sunnybrook Living Care Center in Fairfield, Iowa. A funeral service for Marie was conducted at the First Lutheran Church of Fairfield, on July 27. Marie was born on July 21, 1922, at York, ND, to Alfred and Marie Wurgler, both originally from Bern, Switzerland. Marie was born on the family farm, the second youngest of 14 children, and graduated from York High School. The Wurgler family brought a love of music from Switzerland, forming an ensemble with teenager, Marie, at the piano and playing on the local radio station on Saturday night. Marie was united in marriage to Harold Berg of Starkweather, ND, on March 7, 1942, in Yuma, AZ. The couple lived in San Diego, where they both found wartime employment at Consolidated Vultee Aircraft Corporation (later General Dynamics), Marie as a sheet metal worker and Harold as a tool and die maker. For the fall harvest of 1943, Marie and Harold returned to Starkweather to live and work on the Berg family farm. During their following 27 years in ND, they had three sons and one daughter. Harold, Marie and family were members of the Trinity-Bergen Lutheran Church, where Marie was active in Ladies’ Aid. On the farm, Marie tended a bountiful garden and is fondly remembered by family for wonderful cooking. Marie pursued her dream of being a teacher by leading Sunday School and 4-H classes. In the fall of 1967, Marie and Harold returned to the Southwest to spend winters in Phoenix, which they made their permanent home in 1971. In Phoenix, Marie and Harold joined the Shepherd of the Valley Lutheran Church. Marie enjoyed a long tenure working at the House of Fabrics, where she applied her skills in sewing. Marie sewed many of her children’s clothes and crafted garments of exceptional quality. After retirement, Harold and Marie enjoyed summers of traveling back to ND in their motor home to visit family and friends. In 2017, Marie moved to Fairfield to be near her daughter Brenda. Marie was a daily fan of Jeopardy and Wheel of Fortune and skilled at solving their puzzles, as well as the daily newspaper crossword puzzles. Marie was preceded in death by; parents, Alfred and Marie; husband, Harold; five sisters, Hannah Duchscher, Wilma Loken, Ida Hoime, Elsie Eide, Rose Roed; and eight brothers, William, Edward, Otto, Alfred, Werner, Charles, Hugo, John. Marie is survived by; children, Jerry of Montclair, Calif., Dennis of Centreville, Va., Brenda Kuborn of Fairfield, Gregory of Columbia, MO; eight grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Marie will be fondly remembered by family and friends for her gentle soul and warm heart.
