Devils Lake advance to its first championship game since 2007 after defeating Eastern Dakota Conference opponent West Fargo Sheyenne 80-57 Friday afternoon from the Bismarck Event Center.

BISMARCK — Senior Mattea Vetsch loves playing Sheyenne if her last two games against the Mustangs was indication.

Vetsch, who scored 23 points against Sheyenne back on Feb. 15, followed that up with 21 points on 8 of 10 shooting, including going 5-for-5 from beyond the arc in the first half to propel the Firebirds to the Class A girls state title game Saturday night. Vetsch also had four rebounds and three assists.

Taylor Windjue scored 14 points and had five assists and Jess Mertens had 12 points and eight rebounds as the Firebirds improve to 25-1.

The last time the Firebirds reached the championship game, they lost to Mandan 58-51.

The Mustangs (18-8) were led by Miss North Dakota Basketball finalist Maggie Manson's 20 points.

The Firebirds will face defending champion Bismarck Century, which defeated Bismarck Legacy 60-25.
