Langdon Area-Edmore-Munich overcomes slow start to beat Dakota Prairie in girls Class B Region 4 tournament quarterfinals.

Strategically speaking, Dakota Prairie did everything right to pull off the upset in the first of four quarterfinal games in the Class B, Region 4 girls basketball tournament against second-ranked Langdon Area-Edmore-Munich — except for making baskets.

The Knights were held scoreless for a six minute stretch between the first and second quarters as the Cardinals defeated the Knights 55-31 Monday from the Sports Center.

“Dakota Prairie did exactly what they wanted to do to us. They wanted to get us standing around, not moving. We came in and didn’t match their energy,” said Cardinals head coach Rob Scherr. “They came out with energy and some emotion and we stood around.

“We didn’t get going and I haven’t seen that team in awhile.”

The Knights scored eight of the games first 10 points and held the 8-6 lead with 3:24 remaining in the first period. It was a Callie Ronningen basket at 2:07 that gave Langdon its first lead of the game at 10-8. Ronningen’s basket was part of a run for the Cardinals that kept going and going and going … until it ended at halftime with Langdon leading 26-13.

It was a 20-5 run for the Cardinals.

“We struggled a little bit putting the ball in the hoop,” Dakota Prairie head coach Rob Ressler said. The Knights made only seven total field goals.

“They’re a good team defensively and offensively they find ways to score.”

Morgan Freije led all scorers with 16 points. Ronningen scored 12 points for the Cardinals who advanced to play Harvey-Wells County, which defeated Rolla 45-29 in the second quarterfinal game Monday, tonight. Tip is scheduled for 6 p.m.

“We have to make sure that when they throw up the ball, we’re ready to compete,” Scherr said.

Carly Lippert scored 11 points to lead Dakota Prairie.
