West Fargo Sheyenne knocks down 13 3s en route to a EDC victory on Devils Lake's Senior Night.

West Fargo Sheyenne had Devils Lake scrambling during the first half of their Eastern Dakota Conference game Friday, Feb. 15, so much so that it led to open 3-pointers which helped the No. 4 Mustangs outpace the Firebirds 66-57 from the Sports Center.

“That’s just what they do,” said Firebirds head coach Derek Gathman about the Mustangs connecting on 10 3s during the first 18 minutes of the ballgame. “They get out in transition, sprint to the corners, get to their shooting spots and they’re ready to go. We just didn’t have an answer for that.”

For the game, the Mustangs made 13 3-pointers with Christian Kuntz and Zion Dettmann combing for seven. Both Kuntz and Dettmann scored 16 points apiece.

“We kind of knew that the averages would play itself out. They were going to shoot that many in the whole game,” Gathman said.

The Mustangs (16-3, 15-3 EDC) led by one, 11-10, with 11:51 left in the first half after a Leif Nelson 3. They would then go a 20-9 run over the next seven minutes that upped their advantage to 12. Sheyenne led by 13 at the break.

The Firebirds (10-9, 10-8) were able to cut the deficit to six at different times throughout the second half, at 39-33, 49-43 with 7:51 remaining and 53-47 with 5:25 left after two Leif Nelson free throws but Sheyenne responded, increasing its lead to 12 with over two minutes remaining.

“I was proud of our effort. We got their lead down to six but we they scored 37 points in the first half and it’s tough coming back from that,” Gathman said. “We were right there.

“We can beat these guys if we play a full 36 minutes.”

Leif Nelson, playing his final regular season home game, finished Senior Night with 20 points, scoring 12 in the second half and going 6-for-6 from the free-throw line. Grant Nelson scored 12 points and senior Josh Dahlen scored 10 for the Firebirds.

With the loss, Devils Lake fell a half game back of Red River in the win column for fourth. But the Firebirds have the tie-break over the Rough Riders and can capture the fourth spot outright by winning their final two games, at Fargo North on Tuesday, Feb. 19 and upsetting No. 2 Fargo Davies on Friday, Feb. 22. Red River ends its season Tuesday at Wahepton, in which they beat them by 18 in the previous meeting on Jan. 12.
