Senior Mattea Vetsch leads No. 2 Devils Lake to the 74-57 win over West Fargo Sheyenne.
Devils Lake saw itself in a tight situation Friday, Feb. 15, against West Fargo Sheyenne so the Firebirds needed a shot in the arm. They pulled out needle 15.
Playing in front of a packed Sports Center Senior Night crowd, Mattea Vetsch scored 15 second half points, including a 6-0 run that helped put distance between the No. 2 Firebirds and the Mustangs as Devils Lake defeated Sheyenne 74-57. The win secured the No. 1 spot for the upcoming Eastern Dakota Conference tournament.
Vetsch, the Minnesota-Crookston signee, finished with 23 points.
“Mattea took the game into her own hands,” said Firebirds head coach Justin Klein. “That’s something we’ve seen at times but not always consistently. One of the biggest things there is that we made an offensive adjustment at half and we got to the hole more. Mattea did a good job taking it in.
“But yeah, Mattea’s leadership showed there.”
Leading by seven, Vetsch scored six straight points and 10 of the Firebirds’ next 15 points that ended with a 14 point Devils Lake (17-0, 18-0 EDC) advantage. The Mustangs got within 10 with 5:25 remaining in the game but didn’t get any closer.
Along with Vetsch’s 23, Ramsey Brown scored 16 points and Taylor Windjue scored 12 points.
“I thought they (Sheyenne) shot pretty well in the first half. I thought they played pretty well defensively and that made us work pretty harder in the second half on the offense and I thought that was kind of the difference,” Klein said.
The Mustangs led 26-25 with 2:54 left before halftime but consecutive baskets by Brown and Windjue, followed by four straight free throws by Vetsch to end the half that gave the Firebirds the 33-26 lead at the half.
“I think it was a good team effort. I think we got a good jump from our bench. … We want to finish the season healthy and keep the consistency,” said Klein.
Yasmina Dokara scored 18 points to lead Sheyenne which dropped to 13-6 overall and 13-5 in the EDC.
