Thirteen players score for second-ranked Devils Lake in win over Wahpeton.

The Wahpeton Huskies stayed around with No. 2 Devils Lake for as long as they could but eventually, the Huskies were swept away by the wave.

“It’s a good a feeling for me as a coach but I think for the kids, knowing that if we’re not out there working hard or we’re not getting it done we’re going to have a teammate picking us up off the bench,” Firebirds head coach Justin Klein.

It was that second wave, led by Jaylin Martinson, that eventually help the Firebirds put away Wahpeton 78-44 Friday, Feb. 8, from the Sports Center.

The Firebirds had 13 players score, led by starters Taylor Windjue’s 13 points and Ramsey Brown’s 12. Martinson came off of the bench to score 10, six came in the first half.

“Coming off the bench, I thought they gave us a good spark,” Klein began. “We were struggling a little bit and I thought they came off, got after it and did exactly what we needed.”

The Firebirds (17-0) were slow to get the engine running, only having 13 points midway through the first period. After two Jordyn Kahler free throws, Wahpeton trailed by seven at 18-11 with 6:33 remaining before halftime. However the Huskies (5-12) didn’t score again until there was 40.8 seconds remaining.

The Firebirds did. Devils Lake went on a 22-0 run over a five minute span, capped off by two free throws by non-starter Maya Barendt and the Firebirds led by 25 at halftime.

“I thought it was a good opportunity for us to go with our bench and get some minutes from some younger kids,” Klein said.

The Firebirds’ bench accounted for 34 of the team’s 78 points and was only outscored by the Huskies’ entire squad by 10.

“I thought the kids worked hard. I thought it was a good team effort from everybody and a good home win,” Klein said.

Mahler finished with 14 points and Tyleigh Brady had 12 for the Huskies.
