Hareland's two goals pace the United to a 5-0 win over the Firebirds in girls hockey.

Jocelyn Hareland scored two goals and had an assist and Kaycee Herring had a goal and an assist to lead West Fargo United to the 5-0 win over the Devils Lake Firebirds in girls hockey Thursday night from Quentin Burdick Arena for their fourth straight victory.

The two teams met to open the season back on Nov. 20 when the United defeated the Firebirds 6-0. Despite the loss, Devils Lake head coach Rob McIvor saw the improvement of his team now from that November meeting.

“We controlled the puck a lot more than the first time we played them,” McIvor said. “Puck possession is key against West Fargo because they are also a puck possession team. We got way more shots in this game total than we did the first time, a lot more quality shots where the goalie had to make multiple saves.”

The improvements notwithstanding, the United (8-7) outshot Devils Lake by 10, especially in the third period when West Fargo outshot the Firebirds 17-8. It was also the only period in the game when the United scored multiple goals.

“In the third period, we had some breakdowns in the defensive areas where you can’t have breakdowns,” said McIvor.

Already ahead by two, Herring scored her lone goal seven seconds into a power play after Elle Black was sent to the box for hooking. Herring’s shot came from outside the right post, crashing into the net behind Firebirds’ goalie Molly Black to give West Fargo the 3-0 lead. Madison Hjelden and Madelyn Buchert were credited with assists.

West Fargo's goalie, Brooklyn Mvrvik, was a perfect 31 for 31 on shots to saves.

The United added two more goals before the clock struck triple zeroes.

“I’m not going to take anything away from West Fargo, they’re a big community, they have a good hockey team, their first line is exceptional and they’re well coached.

“Now going forward, I need to coach up the girls a little bit in terms of penalty kills and we need to work on just being confident,” McIvor said.

The Firebirds fell to 6-7 and host Fargo Davies on Saturday. The puck is scheduled to drop at noon.
