Michael Widmer, others, come off the bench to spark Devils Lake to the 57-47 win over the Spartans.
Things were getting tight for the Devils Lake boys basketball team. Visiting Fargo North had taken the lead and was poised to build upon it when it happened — the run.
The Firebirds went on a 16-0 run, sparked by junior Michael Widmer, that helped push the Firebirds to the 57-47 win over the Spartans Friday night from the Sports Center. Widmer scored seven of his nine points in the second half all of which came during that stretch run.
“I just thought those guys brought really good energy off of the bench,” said Firebirds head coach Derek Gathman. Jacob Greene, another bench player, hit a shot-clock beating 3-pointer during the run. “Michael is just a real heady player. He knows where he’s at and he’s smart. He makes winning plays.
“I just thought our bench guys came in and brought really good energy; kept our defense going.”
Trailing by two, Widmer’s three gave the Firebirds the lead at 37-36. On the next possession, Widmer scored again. Those points were followed by consecutive 3s by Green and Leif Nelson and another basket by Widmer and the Firebirds were up 11.
The Spartans pulled within five with under four minutes remaining but was never able to get any closer.
“That’s a huge win for us. … I told the guys that they have a chance to be something here. We have the right mix of guys, the right mix of talent and take care of business at home, win some games on the road and go from there,” Gathman said.
Leif Nelson finished with 15 points. Josh Dahlen had 11 and Grant Nelson scored nine for the Firebirds who improved to 5-4 and won despite shooting just 8-for-22 from the free throw line.
Keaton Hoeg finished with 14 points to lead the Spartans (3-7).
