Richard ‘Dick’ Hamel, 66, resident of Lakota, ND, died Monday, Dec. 17, 2018, at his home, surrounded by his family and friends.
Richard ‘Dick’ Hamel, 66, resident of Lakota, ND, died Monday, Dec. 17, 2018, at his home, surrounded by his family and friends. The Funeral Mass will be held at St. Mary of the Assumption Catholic Church, Lakota on Thursday, Dec. 20 at 11 a.m. Interment will be in the Lakota Cemetery. Visitation will be held at the Church on Wednesday, beginning at 5 p.m. with a Vigil and Rosary Service at 7 p.m. Visitation will continue at the Church on Thursday, beginning at 10 a.m. until the time of Mass. Richard Louis Hamel was born April 22, 1952, at Minot, ND, the son of Louis and Theresa (Stroh) Hamel. As an infant, his family moved to Lakota. Dick was raised on the family farm and attended Lakota High School, graduating with the class of 1970. He then attended the University of North Dakota until 1974, when he returned home to farm with his father. Dick farmed his entire life in the Lakota area, eventually taking over operation of the family farmstead. He loved spending time hunting, fishing and was a fan of auto racing. Dick was involved with many youth and hunting activities, which also included instructing hunter safety courses. He had served many years on the Lakota School Board and was also a member of the Knights of Columbus. Dick will be greatly missed by; his three children, Teri (Billy) Thompson of Park River, ND, Andi (A.J.) Wohlers of Lakota, and Ricky (Katie) Hamel of Lakota; six grandchildren, Blair, Lennyx, Rikki, Kelsey, Finnegan and Simon; his parents, Louis and Theresa Hamel of Lakota; two sisters, Connie (Dennis) Reiss of Arlington, WA, and Traci (Bruce) Maragos of Bismarck, ND; one brother, Jim (Suzanne) Hamel of Fargo, ND; several nieces and nephews; and many special friends, including Jim and Jeanne Aaker and Mike and Cindy Ritteman.
