Eleven players scored, five in double figures, as the Devils Lake Firebirds wins 87-27.

There aren’t pipes to burst in athletics, but pressure can break backs and spirits — ask Fargo South’s girls basketball team.

Devils Lake used a full court press defense to force 29 Bruins turnovers as the third-ranked team in Class A, the Devils Lake Firebirds, beat Fargo South 87-27 on Parents Night Friday from the Sports Center.

“I thought our full court pressure early on set the tone,” said Firebirds head coach Justin Klein. “It got us going and we just kept going from there.”

The Firebirds opened the game on a 24-4 run over the first nine minutes and led 40-8 with a little under seven minutes remaining in the opening half. The Bruins had more turnovers (17) than made shots (6) in the first 18 minutes. For the game, the Bruins were 10-of-43 from the field.

“They’re a young team, they’re rebuilding,” Klein said of the Bruins who had lost by a combined 57 points before Friday’s game. The Bruins dropped to 0-3 for the season.

Eleven players scored for the Firebirds (2-0) with five of them scoring in double figures. Jess Mertens and Ramsey Brown both led the way with 13 points apiece and Taylor Windjue scored all 12 of her points in the first half. Minnesota Crookston signee Mattea Vetsch finished with 11 and sophomore Karli Krogfoss came off the bench to contribute 10 points, eight in the second half.

The Firebirds led by 34 at halftime.

With that one out of the way, Klein’s focus immediately shifted to the Firebirds next opponent, a trip to Fargo on Tuesday to face unbeaten Shanley. The Deacons are ranked fifth in Class A.

"We have a big matchup with Shanley. It's early but that's a big matchup and we're coming off these two wins and now you have to focus on a pretty good team."
