Grand Forks rally from 0-2 hole to beat Devils Lake 4-3.

Sometimes it’s giveth, and other times it gets taketh away.

After Grand Forks fell behind in the first period, it would score four over the next two, including three in the second 17 minutes as the KnightRiders defeated the Devils Lake Firebirds 4-3 in a North Dakota High School Athletic Association girls hockey game Tuesday night from Burdick Arena.

“It was overall a great team effort. People picking each other up. A lot of positive chatter and that’s what we need,” said Firebirds head coach Rob McIvor.

The Firebirds (0-2) had positive things going for them in the first period as Kaylie Klemetsrud scored two goals, including one a little less than nine minutes into the period during a Devils Lake power play. The power-play goal, set up by an assist by Elle Black, gave the Firebirds a 2-0 lead heading into the first intermission.

Grand Forks began its rally quickly once the teams got back on the ice. Emily Benson’s goal just over two minutes into the second period, followed by an Abby Schauer goal four minutes later tied the game at 2-all. The go-ahead goal for the KnightRiders was a lucky bounce — as Katelin Petersen’s shot was blocked my Devils Lake’s goalie Molly Black, however the puck ricocheted off of Black’s chest pad, right back to Petersen who used the second chance to flick the puck into the net.

The game was tied 3-3 going into the second intermission.

“I said that we needed to pick it up a little bit on the defensive side,” McIvor said he told his team after the second period. “I re-arranged some of the lines in terms of where they had to be in our zone because we weren’t picking up the defense very well.

“They were allowed to go in and shoot.” Grand Forks outshot the Firebirds 16-7 during the second period.

“We played a stronger third period, we played a really good first period. Fast, hard on pucks. I was really happy with how we played in the first and third periods. Would I have liked the second period back? Absolutely because I think we could have things differently,” McIvor said.

Elle Black, from an assist by Vivianna Kraft gave the Firebirds the goal that tied the game at 3 apiece.
