Throughout this past weekend in the U.S.A., a grateful nation honored and recalled its veterans for Veterans Day in many different ways.

Devils Lake’s celebration of Veterans Day started Friday with the CMS Salute to Veterans held in the middle school’s gymnasium. Music for this special event was provided by the Grade 6, 7 and 8 Strings, the Grades 5 - 8 Choir and the Seventh and Eighth Grade Band. Following the posting of the colors by VFW Post No. 756, a rendition of the Star Spangled Banner and the Pledge of Allegiance, CMS Principal Dan Kaffar welcomed everyone and read the Veteran’s Day Proclamation from President Donald Trump. Major Chance Schaffner was the guest speaker for the morning. Students Kayla Britsch and Kaylee Lang read essays they had written about Veterans Day and students from the DLHS JROTC performed a Flag Folding Ceremony, describing each fold and its meaning.

Then it was time for the traditional CMS Salute to Veterans video set to patriotic music and honoring the relatives of CMS students, faculty and staff who have served or are serving in the country’s military followed by a moment of silence for all who gave the ultimate sacrifice. Following another number by the choir and the retiring of the colors by the VFW Post No. 756, Kaffer thanked everyone who worked so hard putting this event together and invited everyone to join the students in the cafeteria to have lunch. He pointed out the Liberty Bell mural on the gymnasium wall showing the names of veterans who have family and friends at CMS, encouraging everyone to stop by and look at all the names listed.

A community-wide celebration of Veterans Day on Veterans Day was also held at 11 a.m. on Nov. 11 in the Memorial Building in Devils Lake.
