Flood protection and help with maintenance costs of that flood protection were two of the main topics covered at a Sunday afternoon visit with U.S. Senator Heidi Heitkamp at the Devils Lake Chamber of Commerce offices.

Heitkamp brought together officials from Ramsey County and Devils Lake to discuss ongoing flood protection efforts and a provision she successfully fought to include in a comprehensive water resources bill that would secure federal funding for long-term costs related to the permanent levee protecting the region saving thousands of dollars for both the city and the county.

Under this provision, the federal government would cover 75 percent of the embankment’s associated operations and maintenance costs.

This legislative fix would also help pay for future repairs, such as the replacement of aging water pumps along the embankment.
